Neochromis gigas

Neochromis gigas is a large, robust Victorian haplochromine from rocky shoreline habitats of Lake Victoria. As one of the largest members of the Neochromis genus, N. gigas occupies a high-biomass position in the rocky littoral zone, competing with other aufwuchs scrapers. Its diet is primarily herbivorous, and the aquarium should reflect this with spirulina-heavy feeding and ample algae-covered rockwork.

Males develop bold colouration at maturity and defend large territories aggressively. Given its size, N. gigas requires a more spacious aquarium than most Victorian haplochromines — a minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a breeding group. It is a maternal mouthbrooder with typical Victorian cichlid reproductive behaviour.

Advanced aquarists maintaining large Victorian cichlid displays will find N. gigas an impressive and characterful centrepiece, combining size, colour, and interesting foraging behaviour in a single species.
