Neolamprologus brevis 'Chituta'

Collected from Chituta Bay in Zambia, this population of Neolamprologus brevis is characterised by bright white margins on the dorsal and caudal fins that contrast sharply with a warm tan-gold body. The Chituta form is well established in the hobby and captive-bred specimens are regularly available, making it an accessible entry point into shell-dwelling cichlids.

Chituta brevis follow the same behavioural blueprint as all N. brevis populations: the male defends a loose territory centred on his shell while satellite females each occupy their own shells within the territory. Females handle all brood care within the shell while the male patrols the perimeter. The bond between pair members strengthens with repeated spawning cycles.

A sandy bottom with a generous scattering of shells, a small air-powered sponge filter, and stable alkaline water are all that is needed to get this species breeding reliably. Regular small water changes help maintain the clarity and hardness these fish require.
