Neolamprologus caudopunctatus 'Kipili'

The Kipili collection of Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is sourced from rocky outcrops along the Tanzanian shoreline and shows the most intense orange pelvic fins of any known population, making it a standout among Tanganyika shell dwellers. Wild-caught specimens are infrequently available but captive breeding programmes among specialist hobbyists have made it more accessible in recent years.

Behaviourally identical to other caudopunctatus populations, the Kipili form is a monogamous shell-spawner. Pairs defend a territory around one or more shells, with the female performing all direct brood care while the male patrols and chases intruders. Territorial disputes between males can be intense but rarely result in serious injury if the tank is large enough to establish separate territories.

This fish appreciates a well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate flow and pristine water conditions. Its colouration reaches full expression only in stable, hard, alkaline water with minimal nitrate accumulation. Provide a high-protein frozen food diet alongside a quality dry staple for best results.
