Neolamprologus leloupi

Neolamprologus leloupi is frequently confused with the more familiar N. leleupi but can be distinguished by its paler, more uniform lemon-cream colouration and slightly more elongated body profile. It inhabits rocky shoreline zones of Lake Tanganyika, sheltering in crevices, empty shells, and overhangs while hunting small invertebrates and zooplankton.

In the aquarium, leloupi is a confident and interactive cichlid that quickly learns to recognise its keeper and will beg for food at the glass. It requires more vertical rockwork than a pure shell dweller, though it will readily accept and spawn inside suitably sized shells. The species is best kept as a bonded pair; unpaired fish in a shared tank can be victims of harassment from the dominant individual.

Diet should be protein-rich: frozen Artemia, Mysis, and Cyclops form the core, supplemented with a quality carnivore pellet. Bright, consistent lighting with a white or cream substrate will help the pale colouration to really stand out in the display.
