Neolamprologus marunguensis

Neolamprologus marunguensis is collected from the Marungu plateau coastline in the DRC and is notable for a combination of strong horizontal striping and a deeper, more compressed body than is typical for the genus. The contrast of the dark lateral bars against the creamy-white flanks makes this an attractive and distinctive shell dweller for the discerning Tanganyika hobbyist.

In the wild it inhabits intermediate zones where sandy flats meet shallow rocky areas, using both shell beds and rock crevices depending on what is available. In captivity it shows a strong preference for shells as a spawning site when both options are provided. The species is moderately territorial but does not display the intense aggression seen in some larger Lamprologines.

MaRunguensis is recommended for intermediate-level keepers who are comfortable with Tanganyika water chemistry. It requires stable hard alkaline water, good oxygenation, and a spacious enough tank for each individual to hold a territory without constant boundary disputes. Feed a varied diet heavy in protein-rich frozen foods.
