Neolamprologus ornatipinnis

Neolamprologus ornatipinnis is a visually striking miniature cichlid whose most notable feature is its elaborately patterned fins — the dorsal and caudal fins are barred and spotted with contrasting dark and iridescent markings that are particularly vivid in males. The body is comparatively plain silver-tan, allowing the fin patterning to take centre stage.

Ornatipinnis is one of the more aggressively territorial of the smaller Neolamprologus shell dwellers, and a single male can dominate a 40 L aquarium single-handedly if the tank is not arranged to provide visual barriers between territories. Despite this, it is a fascinating subject for the shell-dweller hobbyist due to the intensity of its courtship and brood-care behaviours.

This species does best in a dedicated shell-dweller tank where its fin displays can be fully appreciated. A white sand substrate that contrasts with the fish's darker patterning, combined with bright but not harsh LED lighting, will highlight the ornate fin pattern. Pair with a quality frozen-food diet to maintain the fish in peak condition.
