Nesaea crassicaulis

Nesaea crassicaulis is the largest commonly cultivated Nesaea species, producing stout, thick stems that can reach 60 cm or more when conditions are optimal. The large, lanceolate leaves are deep orange-red on the upper surface and intensify further under high light, making this one of the most visually imposing coloured stem plants available for large aquariums.

It is demanding in the same ways as its relatives but rewards the effort with a bold, dramatic presence that smaller Nesaea and Ammannia species cannot match. It requires a larger aquarium than most specialist stems — at least 80 litres — to allow the plant room to develop properly without crowding.

Best used as an architectural background anchor in large Dutch or mixed planted tanks, where its scale and colour create a commanding visual statement. Trim when stems reach the water surface to maintain compactness.
