Nile Arowana

Heterotis niloticus is distributed across the Nile, Niger, Volta, Chad, and Senegal basins of West and Central Africa. It is the only osteoglossid that filter-feeds rather than predating, using a unique spiral-valve organ associated with its second gill arch to concentrate phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fine organic particles from the water column. Despite this, it accepts meaty foods and high-quality pellets in captivity. It is an obligate air-breather and must have unobstructed surface access. Unlike other arowanas it is relatively peaceful and can be housed with large companions. Can exceed 90cm and requires a very large aquarium.
