Nile Puffer (Sudan Form)

The Sudanese form of Tetraodon lineatus, collected from White Nile tributaries and the Sudanese Nile reach, exhibits a paler straw-yellow base colouration with finer, less contrasted lateral striping than the West African fahaka. The drier, more variable climate of the Sudanese Nile region imposes seasonal water temperature fluctuations on wild populations, making this form slightly more tolerant of cooler water than southern or western conspecifics. However, in the aquarium it should still be maintained at tropical temperatures with clean, oxygenated water in a very large tank. Like all T. lineatus it is among the most aggressive freshwater puffers and must be kept entirely alone. Its powerful beak can sever fingers and requires hard food multiple times per week.
