Nile Squeaker

Synodontis niloticus is one of the most historically significant Synodontis in the hobby, with records of captive maintenance stretching back well into the early twentieth century. Native to the Nile River basin, it is a large, robustly built species with a pale body scattered with small dark spots and a constitution tolerant of a remarkably wide range of water conditions.

In the aquarium its hardiness makes it one of the more forgiving large Synodontis for aquarists learning the needs of the genus. It adapts readily to commercial sinking foods and integrates without aggression into large African or general community setups. Its longevity is remarkable; healthy individuals can live 25 years or more.

Given its ultimate size it is a serious commitment and requires an appropriate large tank from the start, but it rewards that investment with decades of reliable, engaging occupancy.
