Nitrate Test Kit

The Nitrate Test Kit measures the end product of nitrification using a two-reagent colorimetric method. Nitrate (NO3) accumulates continuously in aquariums as the nitrogen cycle's stable end product and is only removed through water changes, plant uptake, or anaerobic denitrification. Chronic high nitrate suppresses immune function, reduces growth, and triggers algae blooms.

The kit resolves concentrations at 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 ppm. The test requires shaking Reagent 2 vigorously for 30 seconds to dissolve the cadmium-reduction substrate, a common source of error if skipped. Full colour development takes 5 minutes.

Nitrate testing guides water change schedules and helps diagnose the root cause of persistent algae problems. Marine reef aquariums target under 5 ppm, while most freshwater fish tolerate up to 40 ppm with good health.
