Nitrite Test Kit

The Nitrite Test Kit uses the Griess reaction to produce a pink-to-magenta colour proportional to nitrite concentration in aquarium water. Nitrite (NO2) is produced by Nitrosomonas bacteria oxidising ammonia and is consumed by Nitrospira bacteria completing the nitrogen cycle. Elevated nitrite interferes with haemoglobin oxygen transport in fish, causing methemoglobinaemia.

The kit resolves concentrations at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 ppm, covering the full range encountered during cycling and filter crashes. Colour development is complete within 5 minutes at typical aquarium temperatures.

Nitrite testing is most critical during new tank cycling, after adding new fish, following antibiotic treatment that disrupts the biofilter, or after a power outage affecting filter media oxygenation. Compatible with both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
