Nuphar pumila is the smallest species of the genus, native to boreal lakes and cold peat bogs across northern Europe, Russia, and northern Asia. It shares many features with N. lutea but on a smaller scale — the floating pads are modest in size, the flowers are smaller yellow globes, and the submerged leaves are narrow and delicately ruffled. It grows from slender creeping rhizomes and is adapted to cold, nutrient-poor, often acidic water conditions.

In aquarium cultivation, N. pumila is particularly valued for cool-water and unheated setups (8–18°C) where few other ornamental plants thrive. The submerged leaf form is attractive and unusual — long, narrow, and translucent with a delicate ruffled texture quite unlike the floating leaves the plant produces at the surface. It grows slowly compared to N. lutea and is correspondingly easier to manage in smaller aquariums and containers.

For cold-water aquarists and pond enthusiasts in cool climates, N. pumila is a rare and genuine collector's species that adds authentic boreal character to naturalistic setups.
