Nuphar variegatum (Yellow Pond Lily, Spatterdock) is native to northern North America from Canada south to the central United States, colonising lakes, ponds, bogs, and slow rivers in temperate and boreal regions. It grows from creeping horizontal rhizomes and produces attractive, strap-like to oval submerged leaves along with the characteristic rounded floating pads and small globe-shaped yellow flowers in summer. The species is highly cold-hardy, surviving frozen pond surfaces with rhizomes intact.

In aquarium cultivation, the submerged growth phase produces ornamental, narrow-to-oval leaves held upright on flexible petioles, creating a graceful background or midground effect in cool-water tanks. Like all Nuphar, it requires cool to temperate conditions and will not perform well in tropical aquariums. Growth rate is moderate and the plant is easy to manage, making it a good introduction to the genus for temperate aquarium enthusiasts.

N. variegatum is an excellent native pond plant for North American wildlife ponds, providing important habitat and food resources for waterfowl, fish, and aquatic invertebrates.
