Nymphaea lotus Green

Nymphaea lotus var. green is the standard olive-green form of the Egyptian lotus, widely cultivated for aquariums for decades due to its adaptability and robust constitution. It produces broad, rounded leaves mottled with reddish-brown blotches on a mid-green background, growing from a compact bulb that stores energy between growth cycles. The submerged leaves are the most ornamental aspect for aquarium use, though the plant will eventually send floating pads and fragrant white flowers to the surface if unrestrained.

This species is highly tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, making it one of the best lotus plants for beginners. It thrives in both low-tech and high-tech setups and benefits greatly from substrate fertilisation. Growth can be surprisingly fast under good lighting, so plan for adequate space in the aquarium layout.

To keep it as a submerged rosette, remove floating leaves promptly as they develop. The bulb can be left partially exposed or buried just below the surface of the substrate — both methods produce good results.
