Oblique Penguin Tetra

Thayeria obliqua was the first of the two Penguin Tetras described and originates from the Rio Tapajós and adjacent drainages in Pará, Brazil. It is distinguished from the more common T. boehlkei by the oblique angle of the black lateral stripe, which begins higher on the body and descends more steeply into the lower caudal lobe.

In aquarium practice both species are cared for identically and can even be kept together, but true hobbyists value the distinction. T. obliqua is less commonly available than T. boehlkei, making it a more sought-after find for collectors. It is equally hardy and peaceful.

All care requirements are standard for the genus: soft to medium water, a well-planted tank with open swimming space, and a varied diet of quality dry and frozen foods.
