Ocellated Nothobranch

Nothobranchius ocellatus is an annual killifish from seasonal pools in Tanzania, named for the distinctive ocellated — eye-like — spots on the caudal fin of adult males. These spots are thought to serve as decoys to distract predators or to confuse rival males during spawning interactions. Combined with vibrant red-orange body colouration, the species offers a unique visual spectacle among Nothobranchius.

Care requirements are typical for the genus. A 30 L species tank with a peat substrate, soft acidic water, and daily live or frozen foods provides an ideal environment. Eggs are harvested and stored dry for 8–10 weeks before re-wetting. Fry are relatively large at hatching and can accept Artemia nauplii immediately.

N. ocellatus is a species worth seeking out for its distinctive ocellated caudal fin pattern, which distinguishes it immediately from other commonly kept Nothobranchius. It is primarily available through killifish hobbyist networks.
