Ocellated Synodontis

Synodontis ocellifer is distributed across West African river systems from Senegal to the Niger and bears a striking pattern of ocellated — ringed or eye-like — dark spots scattered across its pale flanks and fins. This patterning, combined with its substantial adult size, makes it among the more impressive mochokids for display in large public-style aquariums.

It is a relatively adaptable species in terms of water chemistry, thriving across a wide range of soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. In the aquarium it is a bold, assertive fish that holds its own among large cichlids and other robust tankmates.

Regular water changes and high-quality varied foods keep this species in excellent long-term health and maintain the vividness of its spotting.
