Oktedi Rainbowfish

Melanotaenia oktediensis is closely related to M. splendida and originates from the Ok Tedi tributary system — a major tributary of the upper Fly River in Papua New Guinea. It is a robust, medium-sized rainbowfish with males displaying an attractive blue-green iridescent body and vivid red-orange unpaired fins that become especially bright during courtship and male competition. Females are silvery with less prominent fin colouration.

This species is occasionally confused with other Fly River Melanotaenia due to geographic proximity and superficial similarity, but dedicated rainbowfish keepers value it as a distinct species worthy of maintenance in pure strains. It is moderately available through specialist channels and is reported to be a willing and prolific breeder once established in good conditions.
