Oligolepis Moenkhausia

Moenkhausia oligolepis, the Glass Tetra or Large-scaled Tetra, is a medium-sized schooling characin with a subtly attractive translucent body carrying large reflective scales, a faint mid-lateral stripe, and a distinctive black-and-gold marking at the caudal peduncle. The red upper eye iris adds a splash of colour to what is otherwise an understated but elegant fish.

This species is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a broad range of water conditions. It is active and peaceful, making it a reliable community fish for larger South American setups. In schools of eight or more, the coordinated movements of the group create an attractive mid-water display. It is not as widely kept as its relative M. sanctaefilomenae but deserves greater popularity.

Feeding is undemanding: quality flake, pellets, and frozen foods are all accepted readily. Consistent good nutrition and clean water maintain this fish in excellent health for many years.
