Orange-spot Pleco L021

The Orange-spot Pleco (L021) is an attractively patterned loricariid from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia. Its charcoal-brown body is liberally peppered with vivid orange-yellow spots that intensify under warm, clean water conditions. The species belongs to the Pseudancistrus or related genus group and is moderately straightforward to keep.

L021 is an omnivore that grazes on algae and biofilm while also accepting meaty foods. Provide a varied diet of algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, and occasional frozen foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. Strong water flow and highly oxygenated conditions are important for the long-term health of this species.

The Orange-spot Pleco is compatible with most medium-to-large community fish. It can be territorial toward conspecifics, so house only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large with multiple distinct cave territories. Robust tankmates including larger tetras, South American cichlids, and other Orinoco biotope species are ideal companions.
