Orbicularis Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla orbicularis is a visually compelling mid-sized pike cichlid from the Rio Tapajós drainage, named for the round (orbicular) ocellated spots that adorn its flanks. These spots, each ringed with a halo of pale scales, give the fish a decorative quality unusual in a genus not known for ornamental patterning. In breeding condition, males develop intense blue-green iridescent highlights across the body and fins.

The Tapajós is a clear-water Amazonian tributary with warm, soft, slightly acidic conditions. C. orbicularis requires these to be replicated in the aquarium — RO or soft tap water buffered to pH 5.5–7.0, temperatures of 24–28°C, and tannin additions via driftwood and leaf litter are all beneficial. Sandy substrate, smooth stones, and cave formations complete the setup.

This species is considered advanced due to its stricter water quality needs and somewhat demanding nature in captivity. Once established however it is a rewarding and visually outstanding display fish. Breeding requires pristine water conditions and a strongly bonded, well-conditioned pair.
