Orbiculate Tetra

Poptella orbicularis is an unusual, deep-bodied, laterally compressed tetra from the Orinoco and Amazon drainages of Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. Its near-circular disc profile and highly reflective silver scales distinguish it immediately from the typical streamlined tetra body plan. An active schooling species that occupies mid-water, it forms visually impressive groups that catch light from every angle as they turn. Best housed with calm, similarly sized South American species in spacious aquariums with ample open water. While not demanding in terms of water chemistry, it benefits from good filtration and stable conditions. A distinctive and underappreciated community tetra.
