Orinoco Ram (Wild Form)

Wild Mikrogeophagus ramirezi from the Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela represents the nominotypical form of the species, unmodified by decades of selective breeding. These fish display the classic ram colouration — bold black lateral spot, iridescent electric-blue scaling, vivid red belly and face — in its authentic natural expression. Orinoco wild-forms are typically slightly smaller and more compact than Meta River specimens.

As with all wild ram cichlids, pristine water quality and warm temperatures are absolute requirements. Cool or poor-quality water quickly compromises immunity and leads to disease. A species-specific tank or carefully chosen community with small peaceful fish allows these gems to be displayed at their best.

Breeding follows the standard M. ramirezi pattern: eggs deposited on flat substrate or in a shallow depression, guarded by both parents who take turns fanning and cleaning the clutch. Free-swimming fry are led to feeding sites by the parents and defended vigorously.
