Ornamented Synodontis

Synodontis ornatipinnis is justifiably regarded as one of the most ornately patterned species in the genus, displaying a complex network of dark spots, lines and reticulations across its cream-coloured body and all fin surfaces. The pattern extends onto the fin membranes, creating a uniquely lacy appearance that intensifies in well-conditioned adults.

Native to the Congo River basin, it is a moderately large species that requires quality soft to moderately hard water and a well-structured aquarium with multiple hiding places. It is less commonly available than some Synodontis, making wild-caught specimens particularly valuable.

Due to its relative rarity and ornate patterning, S. ornatipinnis commands premium prices in the hobby and rewards the investment with its visual impact and longevity.
