Ornate Hillstream Loach

Sewellia ornata is found in the fast-moving, well-oxygenated hill streams of central Vietnam, where its ornate spotted pattern blends perfectly with the sunlit mosaic of pebbles and algae-coated bedrock. Its ventral profile is almost completely flat, with broad pectoral and pelvic fins acting as a hydrodynamic suction surface that keeps it glued to rocks even in violent current.

In aquaria, S. ornata behaves similarly to S. lineolata but tends to be slightly shier at first, taking a week or two to begin foraging openly. Once settled, it grazes almost continuously throughout the day, making it highly effective at controlling diatoms and hair algae. It is best kept in groups in a dedicated hillstream biotope with smooth stones, minimal silting, and powerful filtration.

Males develop a more pronounced rostral lobe and display vibrant patterning during spawning condition. The species is intolerant of organic waste build-up and any drop in dissolved oxygen, so robust mechanical filtration and weekly 30–40% water changes are strongly recommended.
