Otopharynx lithobates 'Zimbabwe Rock'

Otopharynx lithobates 'Zimbabwe Rock' is one of the most celebrated deep-water haplochromines in the aquarium trade. The Zimbabwe Rock locality form produces males with an extraordinary combination of electric blue on the face and anterior body contrasting against golden-yellow pectoral and pelvic fins — a color palette that rivals even the most colorful Peacocks.

In the wild, this species inhabits deep rocky slopes at depths of 15–30 m, feeding on invertebrates picked from rock surfaces. In the aquarium it adapts well to shallower conditions provided water quality is excellent and rocky cave structures are available. Dominant males display aggressively to each other but are generally tolerant of dissimilar species.

Maternal mouthbrooder with moderate-sized broods. Females are pale grey-brown and cryptic. The Zimbabwe Rock locality is protected and wild collection is restricted, making aquarium-bred specimens the standard in the trade. An excellent intermediate-level Hap for mixed Malawi communities.
