Otopharynx speciosus

Otopharynx speciosus is widely considered one of the most colorful species in its genus. Dominant males develop a breathtaking combination of electric blue on the head and face with a vivid yellow-gold body that deepens in intensity during spawning season. This contrast is among the most striking found in any Malawi haplochromine and makes O. speciosus a highly desirable showpiece.

Found in rocky habitat transitions along much of the Malawi coastline, this species picks invertebrates from rocky surfaces and sandy transition zones. In the aquarium it appreciates a setup with both rocky areas for territory definition and open sandy zones for foraging. Water quality must be excellent to bring out the full color potential.

Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate-sized broods. Females are pale grey-brown. Males are highly territorial toward conspecifics; one male per tank is recommended. An excellent choice for keepers looking to add an unusually colorful medium-sized Hap to a mixed Malawi community.
