Otopharynx walteri

Otopharynx walteri is a rarely exported deep-water species found along rocky slopes in Lake Malawi, typically collected from depths below 20 m. Males display a clean blue-silver body with orange-tipped anal, dorsal, and pelvic fins — a delicate and attractive color combination that stands out subtly against the bolder colors of tankmates in a mixed Hap display.

Due to its deep-water origin, this species appreciates cooler water temperatures toward the lower end of the Malawi range and benefits from excellent oxygenation replicating the well-oxygenated deep-water conditions of the lake. It is an understated but refined choice for the collector who appreciates less-common, rarer Malawi Haps.

Maternal mouthbrooder. Females are grey-silver and difficult to distinguish from other Otopharynx females. Males should be kept one per tank to avoid aggressive territorial disputes. A peaceful and elegant addition to any large Malawi Hap community.
