Penguin Tetra

The Penguin Tetra is immediately recognizable by its bold black horizontal stripe that begins at mid-body and sweeps diagonally through the lower lobe of the caudal fin, creating the characteristic "hockey stick" or "penguin" silhouette. Another distinctive feature is its unusual swimming posture: Penguin Tetras hold their bodies at a slight head-up angle, often hovering near the water surface or in the upper water column. This surface-oriented behavior is thought to be an adaptation to feeding on insects and small prey at or near the water surface in its native Peruvian and Bolivian river habitats. In the aquarium, schools of Penguin Tetras present a dynamic and lively display as they dart and hover near the top of the tank. They are active, confident swimmers and completely peaceful, making them excellent community fish. The species is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a range of water conditions, though it thrives best in soft to moderately hard water with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. A well-planted aquarium with open surface swimming space suits this species perfectly. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they can jump.
