The Pigeon Blood Discus is one of the most iconic and beloved colour morphs in the discus hobby. Developed by Thai breeders in the 1990s, this variety displays a vivid orange to fiery red base body overlaid with irregular dark pepper spotting and, in high-quality specimens, fine turquoise patterning on the dorsal and anal fins. Like all discus, it is a laterally compressed, disc-shaped cichlid that can reach an impressive 20 cm in diameter, making it a true centrepiece fish.
Discus originate from the warm, tannin-stained, slow-moving blackwater rivers of the Amazon basin in Brazil. In nature they inhabit flooded forest margins and areas around submerged root systems, where they feed on small invertebrates, plant material, and detritus. Their natural waters are extremely soft and acidic, and maintaining analogous conditions in the aquarium is essential for long-term health and breeding success.
In the aquarium, Pigeon Blood Discus are peaceful, somewhat shy fish that benefit enormously from the company of conspecifics. They are sensitive to poor water quality and stress, and are best kept by aquarists with experience maintaining exacting water parameters. A tall, spacious tank of at least 200 litres with gentle filtration, subdued lighting, and regular large water changes is essential. When given optimal care, they are rewarding, long-lived fish that often develop a recognisable bond with their keeper.
