The Red Melon Discus is one of the most vividly coloured captive-bred discus varieties, displaying an intense, largely uniform orange-red to deep scarlet body with minimal striping or patterning. The name references the warm, rich orange hue that resembles the flesh of a ripe melon. High-quality specimens exhibit a near-solid body colour with only faint fin patterning, making them among the most dramatically coloured fish available in the freshwater hobby.
This variety was developed through decades of selective breeding in Southeast Asian and European discus farms, selecting for maximum red and orange pigmentation and the near-elimination of patterned elements. The underlying biology remains that of the Amazonian discus, however, and the demands of captive care are unchanged — warm, soft, acidic, and pristine water is non-negotiable.
In the aquarium, Red Melon Discus are peaceful, sociable fish with an imposing, majestic presence. Their brilliant coloration is most intense in warm, slightly acidic water with low nitrates, and will fade noticeably if conditions deteriorate. A diet rich in astaxanthin and carotenoids can further enhance and maintain the vivid red coloration. As with all discus, they reward experienced keepers with years of spectacular colour and fascinating behaviour.
