Red Phantom Tetra

The Red Phantom Tetra is a strikingly handsome Colombian species closely related to the Black Phantom Tetra, and the two are often kept together for a dramatic red-and-black contrast effect in the aquarium. Males display deep, saturated red body coloration with a prominent black humeral spot bordered by silver iridescence, an elongated dorsal fin with black and red banding, and translucent reddish fins. Females are slightly less colorful but still attractive. Native to the Orinoco River basin and associated drainages in Colombia, this species is accustomed to soft, warm, slightly acidic conditions. In the aquarium it adapts well and is considered a straightforward beginner tetra, though it shows its best color in soft, slightly acidic water. The Red Phantom Tetra is peaceful and active, spending most of its time schooling in the midwater column. It is compatible with a wide range of community fish and particularly striking when combined with green-leaved plants that allow its red body to stand out. Males will occasionally display to each other with spread fins, providing interesting behavioral viewing.
