The Red Rili Shrimp is a selectively bred colour morph of Neocaridina davidi that displays the distinctive 'rili' pattern — a term used to describe shrimp with solid colour at the front and rear of the body separated by a transparent or near-transparent mid-section. In the Red Rili, the head, thorax, and tail fan display bold red coloration, while the abdomen is largely clear or lightly tinted, creating a visually dynamic, split appearance that is immediately recognisable.
The rili pattern is the result of selective breeding for reduced pigmentation in a specific body region, and maintaining a clean, consistent rili pattern across a colony requires ongoing selection. Over time, without culling, rili patterns may become less distinct as transparent and fully coloured offspring appear.
Red Rili Shrimp share the hardiness and adaptability of other Neocaridina davidi variants. They tolerate a wide range of water parameters, thrive in standard planted aquarium conditions, and do not require specialised RO water or active buffering substrate. This makes them highly accessible to beginners while offering a unique and attractive display pattern that stands out in a shrimp colony. They are prolific breeders that establish colonies quickly in a well-maintained nano or community aquarium. Active grazers, they contribute to tank cleanliness by feeding on algae, biofilm, and detritus throughout the day.
