Rosy Barb

The Rosy Barb is one of the oldest and most reliably popular barb species in the aquarium trade, having been kept since the early 1900s. Native to the rivers, streams, and ponds of northern India and Bangladesh, it is a robust, adaptable species that tolerates a remarkably wide range of temperatures, making it one of the best choices for unheated or cool-water community aquariums in temperate climates. Males develop rosy-pink to brilliant red body coloration during the breeding season, with metallic green flanks and red-tipped fins, while females remain olive-gold with a rounder belly. The intensity of male color is directly related to water temperature, diet, and overall condition. Growing to 14 cm, the Rosy Barb is a sizeable fish requiring a spacious aquarium of at least 100 liters. It is semi-aggressive in the typical barb fashion and may fin-nip, but large schools distribute this behavior. It is an active swimmer occupying all water levels, energetic and always moving. An excellent choice for aquarists with large, cold-tolerant community setups or garden pond enthusiasts in milder climates.
