The Snowball Shrimp is a captive-bred Neocaridina colour variant, closely related to the Cherry Shrimp complex, that displays a distinctive uniform cream to opaque white colouration across the entire body. The white pigmentation is generally consistent across the body and has a soft, almost luminescent quality under aquarium lighting. The species is named partly for the distinctive round white eggs that females carry under their tails, which closely resemble small snowballs and are a delightful and recognisable feature of gravid females.
The exact taxonomic placement of Snowball Shrimp is sometimes debated, with some sources listing them under Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis, though they are functionally very similar to Neocaridina davidi in their care requirements and behaviour. They are hardy, adaptable, and thrive in a wide range of aquarium conditions, making them one of the most beginner-friendly white shrimp available.
Snowball Shrimp are active grazers that forage continuously across substrate, plant surfaces, and hardscape, consuming algae, biofilm, and organic detritus. In a mature, planted aquarium they rarely need supplemental feeding, though additional food is welcomed. Colonies grow steadily in suitable conditions, and the soft white colouration contrasts beautifully with green plants and dark substrate. An excellent and visually distinct alternative for aquarists who want something different from the typical red or blue Neocaridina morphs.
