The Striped Barb is a moderately sized, slender-bodied barb native to the peat swamp forests and blackwater streams of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. It bears several distinct dark longitudinal stripes along the flanks against a warm golden-beige body, a pattern that gives it a clean, graphic appearance. The fins are clear to slightly yellowish. Males are slimmer and more intensely colored than females, which develop a rounder belly when gravid. Growing to around 8 cm, this species needs a medium to larger aquarium, but its peaceful temperament and preference for soft, slightly acidic water distinguish it from more aggressive barb relatives. Native to blackwater peat swamp environments, it is naturally adapted to very soft, tannin-rich water with low pH and mineral content, though captive-bred specimens are more adaptable than wild-caught fish. In a well-planted aquarium with dark substrate and tannin-tinted water, the golden-striped flanks of a school of Striped Barbs create an attractive flowing display. This species is fully peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other soft-water, non-aggressive species. An appealing and underappreciated species in the hobby.
