The Thai Micro Crab, Limnopilos naiyanetri, is one of the smallest freshwater crabs in the aquarium hobby, reaching a maximum carapace width of just 1 cm. Native to a single river system in Thailand, this delicate and endearing species inhabits densely vegetated freshwater habitats where it clings to aquatic plant leaves and stems, filtering micro-organisms and detritus from the water column. In the aquarium, Thai Micro Crabs are fascinating inhabitants that spend much of their time perched on plant leaves and moss surfaces, extending their feathery setae-covered claws to catch suspended food particles from the water flow. They are entirely peaceful and pose no threat to fish, shrimp, or plants, making them an ideal addition to nano and micro tanks with the right conditions. Despite their appealing appearance and behaviour, Thai Micro Crabs are considered intermediate in difficulty due to their specific habitat requirements. They need mature, heavily planted tanks with stable, warm water and prefer gentle flow. They are sensitive to parameter changes and should not be housed in new or unstable aquariums. Groups of six or more are recommended to ensure natural behaviour and social comfort. Due to their small size, compatible tankmates must be carefully selected — only the smallest and most peaceful nano fish are appropriate companions.
