The Ticto Barb is a beautifully marked small cyprinid found across the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, inhabiting streams, ponds, and irrigation canals that often experience cool seasonal temperatures. It is distinguished by two dark spots on the body — one behind the operculum and one at the caudal peduncle — and males develop vivid red markings in the dorsal and other fins during breeding condition, earning the alternate name Firefin Barb. Reaching up to 10 cm, it is one of the larger small barbs and benefits from a roomier aquarium of 100 liters or more. The Ticto Barb is notable for its preference for cooler water, with temperatures between 18 and 24°C making it ideal for unheated tanks in temperate climates. It is an energetic, mid-water schooling fish that becomes bolder and less nippy when kept in groups of five or more. The species is an omnivore that accepts most aquarium foods readily. Its adaptability and tolerance of lower temperatures set it apart from the majority of tropical barbs and make it a compelling option for hobbyists seeking something unusual. A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space shows the Ticto Barb at its lively, colorful best.
