The Tiger Oscar is a captive-developed colour morph of Astronotus ocellatus, selectively bred to enhance and intensify the orange-red banding and marbling naturally present on wild Oscars. The result is a striking fish with bold, contrasting tiger-stripe or blotch patterning across a dark olive or charcoal body, often with heightened red-orange coloration on the fins and face.
Aside from its coloration, the Tiger Oscar is biologically identical to the wild-type Oscar. It grows to the same large size of up to 35 cm, produces the same heavy bioload, and displays the same highly intelligent, interactive behavior. Tiger Oscars are known to recognize their owners, follow movement outside the tank, and actively solicit feeding. They are engaging pets in the truest sense.
Like all Oscars, Tiger Oscars are powerful, boisterous fish that will rearrange substrate and dΓ©cor at will. They are predatory toward smaller fish and should not be housed in community aquariums. Their care requirements are identical to the base species: large tank, powerful filtration, stable warm water, and a varied protein-rich diet.
Tiger Oscars may display slight variation in intensity of coloration depending on diet, stress levels, and genetics. Feeding carotenoid-rich foods such as krill and colour-enhancing pellets can help maintain and deepen the orange-red pigmentation. This variety is widely available in the hobby and remains one of the most popular Oscar morphs.
