Winemilleri Eartheater (Orinoco)

Geophagus winemilleri inhabits the Orinoco tributaries and adjacent llanos drainages of Venezuela and Colombia. It is a more slender species than many Geophagus, with a somewhat elevated body depth and an attractive combination of red-orange and turquoise flank iridescence that develops fully in dominant males. It is a sand sifter and delayed mouthbrooder, forming loose social groups in the wild. In captivity it demands warmer and softer water than many congeners, reflecting its lowland blackwater habitat origins. Provide a generous fine-sand base, subdued lighting, and tannin-staining from driftwood or dried leaves to replicate natural conditions. Keep in groups of at least five individuals for confident behaviour and social dynamics.
