Zebra Botia Loach

The Zebra Botia Loach (Botia striata) is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly members of the Botiidae family. Native to the Western Ghats of India, it inhabits clear, fast-moving streams with rocky substrates and dense vegetation. Its bold black-and-cream zebra stripes make it instantly recognisable, and its active daytime behaviour distinguishes it from many other loaches that are largely nocturnal.

In the aquarium, Botia striata does best in groups of six or more, where it establishes a social hierarchy through playful sparring and chasing. It is an outstanding natural snail control agent, quickly detecting and consuming pest snails such as Melanoides and Physa. A well-oxygenated tank with moderate flow, fine sandy substrate, and plenty of caves or driftwood hiding spots replicates its natural habitat.

Diet should include high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and occasional blanched vegetables. Water quality must be maintained diligently as this species is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. With proper care it is a long-lived, rewarding loach that remains active throughout the day.
