Zebra Shovelnose Catfish

Brachyplatystoma juruense is among the most visually striking of all pimelodids, its silvery body wrapped in crisp, sharply defined dark vertical bars that give it an unmistakable zebra-like appearance. It is native to the upper Amazon system including the Juruá and Ucayali rivers in Peru and western Brazil.

Compared to other Brachyplatystoma species it is more modestly sized at around 60 cm, which makes it somewhat more accessible to dedicated large-fish hobbyists with suitable facilities. However, it still demands a very large aquarium with excellent filtration and pristine water quality.

The Zebra Shovelnose is a fast, active predator and should be housed with fish too large to be consumed. It adapts well to meaty prepared foods and becomes a bold, active display animal in a well-maintained tank. This species is rarely imported and commands a premium price.
