Zig-Zag Eel Large

Mastacembelus favus is a substantial spiny eel from Myanmar, Thailand, and surrounding Mekong basin drainages, known in the trade under several names including the honeycomb spiny eel and the large zigzag eel. Its body is covered in a striking honeycomb or net-like pattern of dark lines on a golden-tan background.

Reaching 75 cm or more, this species demands a very large aquarium. It is a powerful burrower and will rearrange a lightly decorated setup entirely over the course of a few nights. Deep fine sand, heavy rock structures that cannot be displaced, and robust filtration capable of handling its bioload are all essential.

Despite its size, it is peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat and can be kept with large robust community fish. Earthworms are a preferred food item and are accepted greedily; prawns, mussel, and sinking pellets provide dietary variety. Long-term commitment is required given its potential two-decade-plus lifespan.
