Zig-Zag Yellow-Tail Eel

Mastacembelus cf. zebrinus is a distinctive trade import from Myanmar and Thailand displaying bold zigzag or reticulated lateral patterning complemented by a warm yellow to golden tint in the posterior region of the body. This combination of markings makes it one of the more sought-after intermediate-sized spiny eels in the hobby.

In its natural habitat it occupies slow-moving and still lowland waters with soft substrates, dense marginal vegetation, and abundant debris. In the aquarium it buries itself readily in deep sand and ventures out after dark to forage. Strong filtration and regular water changes are important given its size and diet.

Earthworms are the food of choice and invariably spark an enthusiastic feeding response even in newly imported fish. Bloodworm, prawns, and sinking carnivore pellets round out a varied diet. It is peaceful toward robust, large tankmates but will consume anything small enough to fit in its mouth.
