Zigzag Eel

Mastacembelus pancalus is distributed across a wide area of South Asia including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, inhabiting sluggish rivers, irrigation canals, and flooded fields where it buries itself in soft mud or leaf litter during the day. Its bold zigzag or reticulated pattern of dark brown on cream makes it one of the more attractive members of its genus.

This species is notably adaptable compared to larger relatives, tolerating moderate water hardness and a wider temperature range. A deep sandy substrate is still essential, but it does not require the extreme tank dimensions of the fire eel or tire track eel, making it a practical choice for intermediate keepers with a mid-sized aquarium.

Feeding is uncomplicated: frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and tubifex are all eagerly consumed. With patience, most individuals transition to quality sinking carnivore pellets. Tank covers must be fully escape-proof, as this species is a determined explorer at night.
