Zonancistrus brachyurus is one of the most visually striking loricariids in the otocinclus alliance β€” a small but boldly marked catfish bearing vivid golden-yellow spots on a dark brown to black body, reminiscent of a miniature L-number pleco. It was described from the Rio Xingu in ParΓ‘ state, Brazil, a river famous globally for its extraordinary fish diversity and the large number of endemic loricariid species that have evolved within its clear, oxygen-rich, fast-flowing rocky waters.

In its natural Xingu habitat, Z. brachyurus is associated with smooth granite boulders in areas of strong current, where it clings against fast flow and rasps the thin biofilm and diatom layer from rock surfaces. The Rio Xingu is extremely clear, warm, well-oxygenated, and moderately hard β€” conditions shaped by the ancient Precambrian basement rock of the Brazilian shield. These specific conditions must be approximated in the aquarium for the species to thrive.

For aquarists, Zonancistrus brachyurus occupies the rare intersection of great beauty and functional algae-cleaning ability. Its care overlaps somewhat with hillstream loaches in requiring strong flow and well-oxygenated water, but it is a warm-water Amazonian species rather than a cool highland one. It is best kept by experienced loricariid enthusiasts who can provide the elevated flow, clear water, and rocky decor that this Xingu jewel demands.
