Apistogramma sp. 'Abacaxis'
Also known as: Abacaxis Apisto, Rio Abacaxis Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma sp. 'Abacaxis' is a spectacular undescribed form collected from the Rio Abacaxis in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, a blackwater tributary of the Madeira system. Males are among the most colorful undescribed Apistogramma in the hobby, displaying dense electric blue iridescent scale rows across the body complemented by vivid orange-red fin margins — a color combination that rivals any formally described species.
Being an undescribed form, this fish is available only from specialist importers and dedicated breeders who maintain populations for the hobby. Its restricted natural range and specific blackwater requirements make it a conservation-priority species from a captive husbandry perspective.
Experienced hobbyists keeping this form are encouraged to maintain breeding records and share data with Apistogramma research networks to support eventual formal description.
Water: Ultra-soft blackwater — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C, TDS under 50 ppm. Tank: 80 L; heavy tannin conditioning, leaf litter, and driftwood; dark substrate. Feeding: Live prey prioritized; frozen Artemia and Daphnia; pellets accepted after months of acclimation. Breeding: Cave spawner in strict blackwater; specialist-level challenge. Compatibility: Species tank or with the finest micro dither fish only.
