Acanthastrea lordhowensis
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Lord Howe Island
Acanthastrea lordhowensis 'Rainbow' is among the most prized and collectible LPS corals in the reef hobby, displaying vivid multicolour corallites combining deep greens, rich reds, purples, and oranges in complex, unique patterns. No two rainbow Acan colonies are identical. These aquacultured specimens from European coral farms are significantly more reliably coloured than early wild imports and adapt well to captive conditions.
Low to medium PAR (50–150) — Acanthastrea does not require high light and can bleach under excessive PAR. Moderate indirect flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Target feed with meaty foods (mysis, Reef Roids) 1–2× weekly for best growth and colour. Extends short sweeper tentacles at night — allow 5–8 cm clearance. Fragging: saw between corallite groups with a wet tile saw or band saw.
