Acropora hyacinthus
Origin: Indo-Pacific (reef slope, 5–25 m)
Acropora hyacinthus is the classic table Acropora, forming broad, flat horizontal plates supported by a central column — one of the most architecturally striking growth forms in coral reef biology. In aquariums it creates a dramatic structural centrepiece that fish shelter under and smaller corals can be placed around. Available in cream, tan, and purple-tipped forms, it requires significant horizontal space to develop its signature table form.
Large systems only (300 L+) to accommodate the spreading table form. Position in the upper half of the tank under high PAR (300–500). Very strong flow directed across the table surface prevents detritus accumulation. NSW parameters: Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 420–450 ppm, temp 24–26°C. Susceptible to tissue necrosis (RTN/STN) if chemistry swings occur — stability is paramount. Allow 30+ cm of clear space in all directions for full table development.
